THE FACTS
In 1963, a man was working on a closet in his home in Cappadocia. He accidentally broke through a wall and found a passageway that went deep underground. Archeologists were brought in and they discovered an intricate system of stairways that went 21 levels down. They found a large chapel, a well, stables for animals, sleeping quarters and everything needed for survival. Each level was protected by a huge stone door. They also discovered a five mile long tunnel that led them to another city of equal size. Some archeologists estimate that these cities can occupy over 40,000 people each. They have since discovered over 200 underground cities in Cappadocia.
Before the rise of Constantine the Great (311 AD), persecution was rampant within the Roman Empire. Apparently, the Christians used these underground cities to protect themselves from torture, enslavement and death at the hands of the Romans. In the 7th century, they were also used for protection against invading Arab forces.
